Unpacking AI comms surveillance

26th April 2023

It felt amazing to return to the Shard where we hosted over 30 electronic Communication, Trade, and technology experts from top financial institutions to discuss the risks and rewards of the growing use of AI in eComms surveillance. The roundtable was fully organised by RegTech Associates and our first since pre-pandemic.

About the event:

UPDATE

Recent enforcement action epitomises the mounting regulatory pressure for firms to improve their electronic communications (eComms) surveillance. New, more advanced surveillance technologies are underpinned by artificial intelligence (AI) and enable firms to process and analyse huge volumes of data to identify, prevent and deter market abuse. However, with great power comes great responsibility, and the use of AI in eComms surveillance is not without its risks and challenges.

On the 26th of April 2023 we hosted a physical roundtable with over 30 electronic Communication, Trade, and technology experts from top financial institutions to discuss the risks and rewards of the growing use of AI in eComms surveillance.

Overall, it was clear that major financial institutions are actively engaging in two distinct stages: some are rapidly integrating AI into their surveillance systems, while others are diligently preparing for its imminent implementation if the right conditions are met. However, challenges surrounding talent acquisition, explainability and changing operating models continue to hold the industry back from true adoption. This session unpacked the risks and rewards of AI eComms surveillance in depth before discussing a way forward with ongoing support from RegTech vendors such as Shield.
